NCUA Chair Pledges Continued Deregulation, Outlines Priorities
National Credit Union Administration ("NCUA") Chair John Crews pledged to continue the agency's regulatory relief efforts and outlined four priorities for his tenure.
In his first in-person remarks since becoming Chair, he told attendees at the America's Credit Unions Congressional Caucus that the NCUA's Deregulation Project (see prior coverage) aligns with his goals. He argued that regulatory reforms must be durable because their benefits compound over time.
He said his four priorities as Chair are:
- enabling access to financial services through safe and sound credit unions;
- maintaining efficient, effective, and risk-based supervision;
- preparing the agency for technological innovation; and
- supporting the creation of de novo credit unions.
During the Caucus fireside chat, he said President Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent want to "unlock our financial institutions, facilitate growth, facilitate ownership, with sustainable affordability." The Chair said he is committed to that goal. He also encouraged credit unions to communicate regularly with the agency to help regulators understand the real-world effects of their policies.
